I expect $4,190.00 plus 15% buyer's premium for a Rolmonica, 16 rolls,
and original box will happen someday, but I believe that the article
is in error unless Hantman's had two Rolmonicas.
I was the successful bidder for a Rolmonica with rolls at their auction
on October 24th. (The "original box" noted in the catalog was the
original shoe box in which the lot was stored.) It went for $130.00
plus the buyer's premium. I do not think that they had a Rolmonica at
their October 9th warehouse auction, but since I was not there, I cannot
say for certain.
Now for an example of how something like that could go for a hammer
price of $4,190.00. According to the successful bidder -- for a Steiff
teddy bear at a Sotheby's auction who paid a hammer price of 55,000
pounds sterling for a lot estimated at between 700 and 900 pounds
sterling -- it seems that he was not too concerned about what the lot
would sell for, so he told his agent "Just get the bear!"
Unfortunately, another bidder had told his agent the same thing. The
result was 55,000 pounds sterling paid for a very desirable, but not
incredibly rare Steiff teddy bear.
