Replacing Piano Case Veneer
By David Stankov

Andy, A few years back I was faced with reconstructing a missing music
rack (the horizontal piece), and two side wings (found on those early
stack pianos) for my quarter-sawn oak Steinway Duo-Art XR (1920). It
was a special order factory case. Steinway told me they could not
reconstruct those pieces for me. So, I did it myself with the help
of a local shop; they specialize in veneers and exotic woods. The oak
veneer came in fairly large rolls.

One of the fellows there was very helpful. I took several pieces of
the piano in and he helped me match up a new veneer. He also told me
how to apply the veneer using heat and carpenter's glue -- it's not
coming off! I'm very pleased with the results.
