I deliberately did not have the chords sound absolutely as tightly
as possible, but instead left the parts "loose", i.e., pretty much the
way I played them in by hand, one part at a time. I didn't quantize
_anything_, which is why the keys on the different pianos didn't always
go down simultaneously.
But the goal was to simulate an orchestra, where there will always be
minute, but musically significant, timing differences in the onset of
notes from different instruments, as opposed to a 20-handed pianist,
who conceivably would always play large chords in perfect sync. If I
do say so myself, I think from a musical standpoint (that is, audible,
as opposed to visual) this effect was eminently successful.
