Hi Jody, Indeed there were pipe organ companies in Battle Creek as
well as in many other towns in southern Michigan. In fact, it was
quite by accident a few years ago that I discovered a pipe organ
foundry at Pleasant Lake, Michigan, about twelve miles northeast of
Jackson. It was long out of business but the present owners of the
property were ready to raze the building when I discovered it.
I managed to salvage several sets of pipes.
I believe Battle Creek was the home of a company that built Compensating
Pipe Organs. At the moment I don't recall the name of the company.
I did some minor work on one of them when I was doing some work for
Dick Madill of the Madill Organ Sales in Lansing. That was probably
about 25-30 years ago. If I recall the name of that company I'll send
it along. It may just have been the Battle Creek Compensating Organ Co.
Many towns and cities had reed organ companies. Some of these would
buy parts from a supplier then assemble them on their own premises and
sell them under their own label. I believe that at one time there were
at least four such companies in Ann Arbor, Michigan, including the
Almendinger Organ Co.
The local "pipe organ" companies more often than not were "Organ Pipe"
companies who supplied pipes to organ builders other than themselves.
