I (finally) listened to the radio interview of Mike Kukral, where
he explains about his Steinway. This is rendered on a 54 minute
RealAudio file at http://www.tcom.ohiou.edu/piano/
Mike did a tremendous job in explaining the wonders of these
instruments to the public, and his technical explanations were
especially clear and lucid. Great job! We must all be cognizant of
our ongoing obligation to be "ambassadors" of our hobby to the world,
and to recognize folks like Mike when this is done well.
Mike said one item in the interview about which I'd like clarifica-
tion: he said that the cost of a new Steinway Duo-Art XR was about
$7,000 in the mid-1920s. All of the advertisements I have seen suggest
a "top end" price of about $1250 (which would be roughly $48,000 today
-- nearly comparable to a new Steinway today).
Was Mike correct about the $7,000? This seems a bit high, but I would
defer to folks with greater knowledge than I.
Respectfully,
Tim Baxter
