Cracked Piano Plate
By Andy Taylor

Speaking of piano plates, I have a customer's upright piano in the
shop for restringing. The old plate is solid, except for a tiny
hairline crack between a couple of the tuning pin holes in the high
treble. This was not noticed until the plate was stripped of the
paint and filler. It looks like the crack has been there for years.

My question is, should I attempt to braze the small crack in the
honeycomb, or should I leave it alone? I don't think this area
bears much tension above the flange, seeing that most old 3/4 plate
Gulbransens don't even have a "honeycomb" area in their plates, but
I thought I should ask the question before proceeding.

Thanks in advance
