MIDI Data Encoding on Pianomation Audio CDs
By C. Jim Cook
Is there any way to extract the information from a Pianomation CD-ROM,
say as a MIDI file?
I haven't even been able to read a Pianomation CD-ROM as data files of
any sort. It appears to be a music CD according to both the Macintosh
and Windows NT systems I've tried so far.
Perhaps they have encoded the digital playing signals on top of the
analog music carrier signal on the CD-ROM, hence why computers don't
see it as data? (I've checked MMD archives, but did not find any
previous answers to this question.)
Thanks!

[ The Pianomation CD conforms to the usual standards for audio sound,
[ but monaural audio appears on one channel and piano control data on
[ the other. The MIDI wireline data is encoded with an old but elegant
[ synchronous data modem scheme in order to keep the piano and the
[ orchestra synchronized. I don't recall the name of this method
[ (which nicely compresses 31.5 kilobaud MIDI into the audio range),
[ but it may be mentioned in the Pianomation literature. -- Robbie
