Sankyo 20-note Disc Player at "Mr. Christmas"
By Steven Branco
Just for your info (and this info is free) -- I located the "new"
Mr. Christmas disc player that utilizes the Sankyo 20-note movement.
There are two versions. A somewhat more commonly available version is
called "Holiday Symphonium" which is a smaller box with 16 Xmas tunes
on discs. The discs are in gold colored plastic about the thickness
(maybe thicker) of a credit card.
Mr. Christmas also produces a deluxe version called the "Holiday Music
Box". This features the same 20-note movement (same size discs) but
housed in a more deluxe case. The case is taller and twice as long as
it is wide. There is an internal section with precut slots which allow
you to house all 16 discs upright to the right of the movement. There
is also an inset panel of plastic on top to simulate beveled glass.
This is similar to the simulated beveled glass on their model last year
which plays the perforated cards. This panel allows you to watch the
disc player in motion while lid is closed.
On the less deluxe version there is a solid wood top inside which the
discs are stored in a pocket. Here is the only hitch. The deluxe
version (I was told) is avail only through "Sam's Club". This a
wholesale club type store which requires a $35.00 membership fee to be
able to shop there. Still, all in all it was worth it. The box is far
superior in appearance than the smaller one. Also was cheaper. I paid
$70.00 in tax-free New Hampshire. I saw the smaller one only in one
other shop and it was $20 dollars more than the deluxe I got.
Another note. On the deluxe you still get 16 tunes but only 12 are
Christmas tunes. They've included 4 non-Xmas songs for the rest of the
year. I've only had mine for a day but wanted to post to say I am by
far more pleased with this model than the perforated card version (no
more paper jams). Hope this is of help to someone considering the
recent interest in these 20-note players.
In closing, one can call Mr. Christmas direct at 1-800-4MR-XMAS and
they can advise you of dealers in your area who sell either the simple
or deluxe version. Good Luck to all of you who pursue this.
