Looking For Detailed Plans for a Calliope
By Fritz Gellerman

Jack,

I built my own version of a Wurlitzer Caliola about 1975. My version
has wooden flute pipes voiced on 3.5 inches of water so that it is
quiet enough to play indoors. The conventional calliope uses a much
higher pressure so that they are too loud to play inside. The pipes
came from a trashed church organ. It has 44 chromatic notes, bass
drum/cymbal, snare drum and 13 notes of bells. It originally had a
keyboard as well as a roll player, but the suction unit tended to
overheat when the keyboard was used so I removed it. I may still have
the keyboard in case you're interested. This organ has been very
reliable and one of my favorites over the years and has always
fascinated visitors. If you would like more information let me know.
