I met Larry Broadmoore at the recent AMICA convention and saw a demon-
stration of his PowerRoll system. As an experienced engineer, I was
very impressed with the elegant design of the parts and how Larry has
done everything possible to make the unit work on all variations of
feeders. He may have missed a variation in his design, but my guess
is that it would be a real odd-ball.
I was also impressed with the integrity of the individual. He is
doing everything possible to meet production demands. His electronics
partner died recently, which has put the building of the circuit boards
on hold for a while. Within the past few weeks he has found another
individual to build these boards, but unfortunately the transfer of
stock and information is not instantaneous, even in this electronic
age. Based on what I heard from Larry, the electronics should be
coming out in the next week or so.
He has also experienced some start-up difficulties from the mechanical
side. These problems are with putting the unit together, not with the
function of the unit itself. As a result, he has backtracked and built
some additional fixtures to aid in the assembly. These fixtures are
now done, which should let his production get started.
In short, based on two or more hours of conversation that I had with
Larry at the convention, I believe that he is very honest and is doing
his absolute best to meet the orders that have been placed. His back-
log was made worse by his price increase announcement, since he got a
flood of orders from that announcement.
I am a little concerned by the picture that is being painted in MMD
about this product. I have no personal interest in it or Larry's
company; however, I do recognize good design and engineering when
I see it, and this product falls into this category.
Now that Larry is very close to having all of his problems solved,
I would hate to see his hard work flushed down the tube with a
depression-like run on the bank because people get panicky due to some
postings on MMD. Unless he is an unusually good con-man, I believe
that he is doing everything within his power to meet your orders, and
has run into the kinds of problems that greet the start-up of every
new product.
The difference is that Larry does not have the resources of a big com-
pany behind him to solve these start-up problems. As a result, each
hurdle must be overcome serially rather than in parallel. Let's not
"Deep Six" an innovative product by rumor and panic just when every-
thing is in place to make it happen. We need to encourage each other
in the hobby (business) of ours. There aren't enough of us to go
around!
