Music Media for Mechanical Music Instruments
By Robbie Rhodes

A large, new web site is now at MMD, devoted to manufacturers,
brand names, product numbers and song titles (i.e., "rollography"
or "discography") of the music media which is played by mechanical
music instruments. The structure and some current projects are

  Music Box & Organette Media
Fair Organ & Street Organ Media
  Identifying Music Rolls

  Orchestrion & Nickelodeon Media
    Automatic Music Roll Co.
    Clark Orchestra Roll Co.
    Wurlitzer
    Mills Novelty Company

Player Piano Media & Piano Roll Manufacturing Companies
Alphabetical list of brand names on music roll labels
    Standard Music Roll Company
    Supreme Music Company
    Atlas Player Roll Company
    Staffnote Player Roll Co.
    American Piano Company
Play-Rite Music Rolls, Inc., Turlock, CA
    Columbia Music Roll Co.
    Capitol Roll & Record Co.
    Supertone Player Music Rolls

Mill Violano scales are provided by MMDer Hal Davis, and the history
of the New Jersey piano roll companies provided by Frank Himpsl.
A large rollography for Columbia/Capitol piano rolls is courtesy
of historian Mike Montgomery, and a companion rollography for the
Columbia/Capitol A-rolls is planned by Rob DeLand.

Ampico, Duo-Art and Welte rollographies already exist, so coverage
of reproducing pianos and rolls will be limited to material which
clarifies or expands upon those previously published books.

A special page is "Identifying Music Rolls", by Richard Vance, which
should help to sort out the varieties of pin-end rolls and odd rolls
for player organs of all makes.

Input from all is requested. There are lots of missing data which
I hope the collectors can supply, and I'd love to have more images
of labels. These pages will eventually be more than I can keep up
with so I hope volunteers with a little web page experience will
step forth. Contact me for details, and please visit the new site at
