The Walt Disney Mechanical Music Collection
By Marty Roenigk

The discussions on the Gay 90's Village have been very interesting.
I just want to mention why I have been quiet on the subject. We
(Mechantiques) purchased the mechanical music collection from Walt
Disney in Orlando a couple of years ago. There were about 25 machines,
and many of them had come from the Gay 90's Village of Paul Eakins.

Included were the Seeburg H (the only piece we kept, now on display
in the lobby of our National Register Crescent Hotel & Spa in Eureka
Springs, AR, for details see www.crescent-hotel.com), the Sextrola that
was asked about, Sadie Mae (87-key Gavioli or DeKleist), the Encore
Banjo, the double Mills Violano, the enormous and fabulous Wurlitzer
Style 32 Concert PianOrchestra, the much discussed "Beale Street
Special", the Mortier "The Emperor", "Sara Jane", and a number of
other pieces.

This was a truly wonderful collection, but the fellow who put it
together for Disney had retired and Disney, I think rightfully so,
found it too difficult to maintain, versus their new electronic anima-
tions and things. In any event, they sold the collection en masse
to us and we resold it to individuals and dealers around the world
(again, with the exception of the Seeburg H).

The reason I have been silent is that I cannot talk about where the
individual instruments have gone. As a dealer, I feel that our
customers deserve confidentiality unless they elect to disclose that
they have purchased an instrument. Some of these are in very prominent
collections that have been visited by a lot of people, but we leave it
to the owners to disclose (or not disclose) that they own the instru-
ments. Needless to say, the instruments are all being appreciated,
although it is very unfortunate that they could not remain on truly
public display (again other than our Seeburg H) for the public to
enjoy.
