Jill Miller said, "No advertisements for selling your own rolls should
be placed on MMD. I don't think this is the place to advertise your
wares."
Admittedly I have a vested interest in this subject but I totally
disagree with Jill's point of view. I joined MMD because it was a
unique facility where I could find most of my mechanical music
requirements and be advised of new developments and products which
otherwise I might have missed. For instance, it was on this list that
I first saw the excellent PowerRoll unit advertised and (dare I mention
it) the various glues, cloths, tubing and leathers recommended by
professional rebuilders. So why should an MMD embargo be placed on
piano rolls, which are fundamental to the enjoyment of our hobby?
The prime function of all roll-playing instruments is to make music,
what is so wrong about bringing the existence of new piano rolls to
fulfill that purpose to the attention of fellow MMDers? My area of
interest is jazz and hot music; I am not seeking to blow my own trumpet
here but many times jazz roll collectors have told me that they became
aware of my roll activities only by chance, and since most of the
titles I produce are available for just a few months to a specialist
market they had little hope of amassing many of them.
I would have thought that the MMD was the ideal platform to announce,
"Hey everybody, this new product (whatever it is) is on offer. If you
would like more information contact this URL (whatever it is)". For
the life of me I can see no problem with that.
