Subject: decals
Sources at Steinway & Sons (S&S) inform me that they have heard
nothing of Steinway's alleged intention to restrict the use of their
decals to authorized rebuilders. It has come to light that there is
only one authorized maker of decals (Decals Unlimited) and that some
other outfit on the West Coast was making them, an activity that S&S
frowns upon.
One can order a brass stencil decal from Steinway, and if you want
more than one, you will be requested to supply a serial number from
the piano it is intended for (see the dangling participles). Decals
Unlimited will supply the excellent rub-on kind, apparently on request.
Steinway & Sons owns their trademark and can rightfully control who
manufactures and uses it, but they are obligated by law to supply parts
for current models. Apparently, the decal is a part.
One can rest assured that S&S has no interest in alienating piano
techs, who can recommend or unrecommend their pianos.
