I compared my movement with the Sankyo movement photos at Manda Jost's
web site, and the two machines are radically different. The modern
Sankyo is much more compact and elegant, and could indeed work with
discs, since everything but the pressure plate is on one side. How-
ever, from the card photo, it appears to have the same scaling and
margins as my Melodian, so we just might all be compatible!
One concern: last night I put batteries in my Melodian and played
through my cards. Some notes miss on occasion, since the card edges
get worn from the side pressure and cause the strip to mistrack just
enough that some teeth miss their holes. (Just like a player piano
roll!) I wonder if the Sankyo mechanism is any easier on the cards,
in terms of guiding them more gently through the rubber pinch rollers.
I noticed that in years past I had deliberately elongated (by over-
punching) some holes vertically, to make sure they tripped their notes.
That's fine up to where wrong notes start playing, although that hasn't
happened here yet.
