When I read about this modern music box I wondered if it weren't
the same as the paper strip music boxes sold in the US at Christmas
time under the "Mr. Christmas" name. It's commonly available at
WalMart stores, and I picked one up for $30 the day after Christmas
last year, when WalMart's Christmas items went on sale at half price.
I guess I was feeling industrious tonight, because I fished the
box out of storage, and it is indeed the same musical movement:
same 10-slot bar holding the paper strip down, and similar casting.
The strip plays 20 notes, two notes between each division on the
"pressure bar". The box is made in China, and the model is called
"Music in Motion".
It might be nice to get some non-Christmas music for this thing, and
I bet there are at least another dozen or so MMDers who bought this
instrument; is anybody else interested in buying more music for it?
I must say this thought won't be at the top of my 'to do' list, but if
additional music were readily available for it I would probably buy it.
The instruction sheet for my box gives a URL so I went for a look:
http://www.mrchristmas.com/
I couldn't find the paper strip model, "Music in Motion", anywhere on
their web site (which isn't very extensive), but some MMDers will be
happy to learn that in the "new items for 1999" section they list a
disk box! For a look go to
http://www.mrchristmas.com/hs.htm
They call it "Holiday Symphonium", hence the initials in the URL. It
looks pretty nice, similar to the paper strip model. The description
reads:
"Holiday Symphonium (tm) - Hand-crafted wooden music box with
brass tone details plays 16 individual classic Christmas songs.
Each song comes on a separate disk that is elegantly stored in the
lid of the box."
I wonder if it isn't another iteration of the same mechanism under
the tune sheets?
They also have a "Millennium Carousel". I wonder if that means it
stops dead at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. Better stock
up on hay for those horses. ;-)
Cheers,
