Hi Robbie and All, I live in Cornwall UK, and guess what? The central
line of totality of the eclipse goes right above where I live. It
lasted over two minutes and was just quite unbelievable.
Over 1 million people came into the county of Cornwall, with most in
the area where I live. The total population is normally 200,000. The
roads are gridlocked and well-nigh every farmer seems to have rented out
his field for camping. There are a lot of new-age travellers (hippie-
like people), plus a lot of pagans who worship at the many ancient
sites we have in this area, which goes back to the early stone ages.
But most of the visitors are just interested people of all ages from
all walks of life.
The day was slightly cloudy but it was not ruined. It got chilly
first, and then a little windy as the shadow started to pass over.
It was very eerie, and tingles went up your spine. Then very quickly
it went from day to complete darkness, and it was very eerie. Imagine
it being like midnight at 11 o'clock in the morning ! Then all of a
sudden it was light again, just before all the street lights started
coming on.
I live by the sea, and to see it over the ocean -- it was just amazing!
As one astronomer said, 98% is not good enough: you need to be in the
area of totality, i.e., 100%. I understand the next eclipse is in
Africa in 2001.
I have photos but have not posted !
