Monkey Violinist Automaton in San Jose CA
By Marc Kaufman

Attached are the pictures I took yesterday of the monkey automaton at
the San Jose History Museum in San Jose, California.

The Monkey Violinist is evidently by Phalibois, ca. 1880. The music
plays well, and there are two motions: the head and arm move. I
couldn't tell if the mouth should move, but I believe the eyes should.

Unfortunately, the piece is exhibited on a table in a dimly lit room,
far from the viewers, and it is never played for visitors. I'm going
to try to borrow it to exhibit at the 2000 MBSI convention in San Jose.

Marc Kaufman

[ Thanks, Marc. I'll place the images at the MMD Pictures site.
