Exceptions to "Next Generation" Stereotypes
By Joyce Brite

I disagree with Tom Detweiler that young people don't care about the
past and don't want to study and preserve the old rolls, machines and
ways of doing things. It is unfair to write off all young people
because of the actions and appearance of a few.

I work on a university campus amid thousands of 18- to 25-year-olds.
Sure, we have students with neon colored hair, dreadlocks, pierced
body parts, and tattoos. But, we also have very conservative looking
students. I've been around these college students for years and have
even been one myself. I can testify that things aren't always what
they seem. Some of the more outlandish looking students turn out to
be the hardest working, most conscientious and dependable individuals.
On the other hand, the more conservative looking students all too often
turn out to be self-centered, sarcastic and unreliable.

Tom, how do you expect to get young people interested in mechanical
music if you insult them by calling them foul-mouthed and rude? If
you treat young people (or anyone else) with respect, they'll treat
you with respect.
