Value of Steinway B Piano
By Marc Sachnoff
Dear Fellow MMD'rs: Recent discussions on pneumatic vs. solenoid pianos
got me thinking of a long time dream of mine -- purchasing a vintage
Steinway B and installing in it the finest modern solenoid system.
Such musings suddenly became more concrete this weekend following the
marriage of my partner.
The church in which the ceremony took place has a fine unrestored 1925
vintage ebony Steinway B with its characteristic booming bass. The
keys have some sticking, but are original ivory and its original bench
is still there. The piano was purchased in 1931 for the church and has
been in the same room ever since. In discussions with church members,
the fine folks at the church have decided that they would prefer a high
quality digital keyboard instrument and showed immediate interest in
selling me the Steinway. They'd even consider me providing the digital
instrument and some cash!
I know there's been some discussion on the values of non-player
Steinways over the years on MMD. Can our experts provide input on
reasonable value ranges for this instrument. Second question would be
approximate costs for action work/hammer replacement (tho' I'm not sure
it really needs new hammers as the piano was "only played on Sundays."
Next I'd like to hear some thoughts about the newest generation of
PianoDisc vs. the QRS system. And their relative merits in both
recording from the keyboard (we're a family of musicians) and playing
music files from a variety of sources. All input would be welcomed.
Thanks,
Marc Sachnoff
