To All: Reading Dan Wilson's recounting of the "Triphonola Story"
(990714 MMD) suggests that the readership should be reminded of the
need to locate and preserve these recordings. Among them are some of
the rarest and indeed unique performances in the entire world catalog.
Further, his statement of the fragility of the rolls he owns would
reinforce the urgency. Many of the historic pianists, forming an
interpretive connection with Liszt, Anton Rubinstein and Busoni to the
present are represented on these rolls. And many of the recordings
are of pieces that have disappeared from the repertory, are only to be
found on these documents, and most important, comparative phonograph
recordings do not exist.
As many collectors of some history will know, the 78 rpm format simply
couldn't do justice to the singular interpretive skill(s) these artists
had mastered. If we are to provide our descendants with documents
which otherwise will perish, we must act quickly.
