I doubt that the swastika in the Edison ad was a "Nazi swastika",
simply due to the period of time the Edison phono was produced
and sold.
The swastika is an ancient Sanskrit symbol for rebirth or spiritual
evolution, which was used all over the world in various artistic
milieus prior to WW2. I have been in "craftsman era" homes built
around the turn of the century with entry tiles that bear the swastika
symbol from around 1900-1915 or so, and I have a set of books that have
a swastika on the outer binding, but they are from around WW1. The
Nazis simply co-opted the symbol to signify the rebirth of their
destroyed nation from the ashes and ruin of Versailles.
So don't get too excited when you see swastikas (which may be turned
at different angles, or even backwards) on pre-WW2 items, they were
only viewed as decorative elements at the time, and had no political
meaning.
(It is unfortunate that we all get so conditioned by the media that we
overlook the historical context of symbols. I completely reject ALL
media propaganda which tries to condition a viewpoint or belief system,
a la "1984", and treat everything and everybody on an individual level.
That works much better!)
