Relationship Between Mustel and Mason & Hamlin
By Tom Gregory
Greetings:
I am beginning a restoration of a Mustel Harmonium Concertal, built in
Paris in the 1920's. Along with the Concertal are nearly 100 rolls
in like new condition. This will be an exciting project, especially
since the original mechanism was such high quality.
The instrument has two power sources (1) vacuum unit for the player
unit and (2) blower for the harmonium. The Swiss blower blower
operates on 110 volts/50 cycles and is located in the bottom of the
case. It seems to have been added at a later date.
The motor which drives the vacuum pump for the Concertal was built in
the U.S. and operates on 110 volts/60 cycles and is located in a
separate cabinet.
Does anyone know if Mustel had an agent located in the U.S., and could
that representative have been Mason & Hamlin? I understand that of
Mustel helped M & H develop their Liszt reed organs.
Did the relationship between these companies go any further?
Does anyone know of any other Mustel Concertal harmoniums located in the
U.S. ? I only know of three others, all located in Europe and Middle
East.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Tom Gregory
