Robbie, This is what I put into our newsletter.
A Carousel for Missoula bids a fond farewell to Scott Olson, gaviman.
Scott died Friday, May 21, 1999, at the age of 47.
Scott became fascinated with band organs when he was only four years
old. Many years later, when he heard a carousel was coming to Missoula,
he recognized the opportunity to be the gaviman for the carousel's band
organ. The term "gaviman" was coined to describe those who once cared
for Gavioli organs owned by traveling carnivals.
Scott convinced those working on the carousel that it would need a band
organ to create the proper atmosphere for a true carousel ride. Scott
traveled to Ohio three times to supervise and offer advice while the
Stinson Organ Company was creating our band organ -- the largest band
organ in continuous use in the United States.
Band organ music was another interest of Scott's, and he spent many hours
seeking old band organ rolls and finding someone who could punch songs
on new rolls. In addition to performing large and small repairs and
maintenance on the band organ and the carousels public address system,
Scott was also learning to punch his own rolls.
When not working on the band organ at the carousel, Scott traveled the
country repairing and maintaining organs of all types for churches and
other businesses. He was also a talented musician who loved nothing
better than to spend time playing music with his friends.
The staff and volunteers of A Carousel for Missoula will miss Scott's
knowledge and skills, as well as his friendship.
Memorial contributions should be sent to
