Juergen Hocker's announcement about the forthcoming Schott CD, which
in itself sounds splendid, contains the seeds of some regrettable
confusion as to the CD's actual title. In one place it is being called
"Dictionary of Mechanical Musical Instruments," in another "Encyclo-
pedia of Mechanical Musical Instruments." Exactly which is it? Or is
it really neither? Seeing that the CD is being published by Schott,
a German firm, I suspect the title is "Enzyklopedie der mechanischen
Musikinstrumente."
The one title version "Encyclopedia of Mechanical Musical Instruments"
is so close to that of the Bowers' Encyclopedia, differing only in the
replacement of "Automatic" with "Mechanical," that questions have
already risen about the relationship of the CD to Q. David Bowers'
seminal work.
Perhaps someone can tell us once and for all what title will appear
on the CD, if that has been definitely decided by Schott -- not a
translation of the title, but the actual and exact title, even if it
should be in Urdu or Chinese.
