In 990519 MMDigest Philippe Rouille wrote about a CD-ROM about mechan-
ical musical instruments and their music. This CD-ROM was compiled by
the musicologist Christoph Reuter with assistance of the Gesellschaft
fuer Selbstspielende Musikinstrumente (GSM), the German Society for
Selfplaying Instruments, and several important collectors. Now -- a
first announcement:
Imagine a book in which you will find everything you ever wanted
to know about mechanical musical instruments. Such a book would
contain more than 800 colour pictures and several hundred pages of
text. In addition, it would contain 116 sound examples, 60 videos
and animations, various search functions, a bibliography of more
than 500 titles, a glossary of about 2,000 entries, etc.
You have certainly guessed by now that we are talking about a
CD-ROM which will be available soon. The publishing house Schott
Musik International (winner of the digital award 1998 for the CD-ROM
"Paul Hindemith Life and Work") has attended to this project and
will soon release the CD-ROM "Dictionary of Mechanical Musical
Instruments" in German and English -- the hitherto most comprehensive
work on the subject of mechanical musical instruments.
