Hi All, I picked up what I think is an interesting piano a couple of
weeks ago. It is a Melville Clark Apollo, SN 15558, which means it was
built in 1909. It has the usual spring-winding roll motor, and the
early style pneumatics on the front of the action pushing down on the
keys. I believe it is the Apollo X expression system. The tracker bar
has 96 holes. It has the ratchet type expression unit.
The bellows are foot pump and electric combination. It has regular
foot pump bellows along with a tugboat style pump with electric motor.
There is also another pulley off of the pump to run a pitman rod to the
top to wind the roll motor.
I didn't know that this expression system was built as early as 1909.
The piano is in exceptional condition and looks as if it has never been
touched (Hooray!). The old wiring is intact and still has a plug with
horizontal prongs (- -) rather than vertical like today (| |), and
the original plate on the back stating 110 volt AC. I am impressed
with the way the piano is built. It is really a heavy well-made
instrument.
One problem is when I get around to rebuilding it, I don't have any
expression rolls for it. Any one have any for sale? I guess it uses
Apollo X - Art Apollo - QRS Autograph Automatic - or Price and Teeple
Art Symphonola Roll.
I will be happy to answer any questions anyone has and will be equally
happy to take any advice that any one has to give.
