Lyle Allen asked for the easy way to play Ampico rolls on an 88-note
instrument (990523 MMDigest).
The established method for this, amongst UK public performers who like
to use reproducing rolls along with 88-note rolls, is to tape two
strips of black bin bag material (which is thinner than most plastic
sheet) so that they hang down over the tracker bar so as cover notes
1 to 4 and 85 to 88, and are not long enough to be sucked up into the
roll on rewind.
Thus disported, they enable Duo-Art rolls to be played.
If, when the roll starts and begins to cover them, they are each slid
outwards one note so as to cover notes 1 to 3 and 86 to 88, the roll
will pin them in that position and Ampico and Welte Licensee rolls may
be played. So tilted, they cover the Themodist "theme" ports, but
these are not used on those systems.
To play 88-note, the strips are folded back to rest on top of the
tracker bar.
I feel this ought to be a FAQ.
