This has been my experience with Decals Unlimited. I hate to say
negative things like this, _but_ ...
When I bought my unrestored Mills Violano it had the original decal
on it. The finish had beaded up in huge lumps of finish. Like large
beads which would flake off in one piece if scraped. It had to be
refinished. The original decal however was still quite visible and
the color was still good.
When I refinished it I used nitrocellulose lacquer. After carefully
removing the old finish and preparing the surface, I stained and filled
with color matched paste filler. I sealed the surface with thin amber
shellac which gave the mahogany a beautiful color. Then I built up
the surface with lacquer and leveled it with a block until it looked
like a mirror. Then when I was satisfied I put on the decal and put
a few coats of lacquer over it. Then I leveled the finish again and
rubbed it out with pumice and rottenstone and polished it.
After a short while the Decals Unlimited decal started to fade and turn
from the gold color to a dull gold and now, after two years, it's almost
a green-gold color and hard to see. It looked nice at first but now
I'm not satisfied at all.
Perhaps I did something wrong? Is lacquer compatible with these
decals? I've since heard complaints from other people about this
problem and would like to hear from other people who have had this
problem.
