Mechanical Music in Washington, DC
By Jim Canavan

The American History Museum in the Smithsonian has an exhibit on
player pianos, including a beautiful art case Duo-Art with a separate
Concertola roll changer. Unfortunately, the only thing that actually
plays in the exhibit is a Yamaha disk piano. The same museum's phono-
graph exhibit is old, tired, and a disgrace, considering the machines
the Smithsonian has packed away in their warehouses.

However, if you happen to be there on a weekday, around noon or so
they sometimes play the Ampico grand or the Welte player organ, both
of which are located in the ice cream parlor on the ground floor.
That's worth the visit!

Glen Echo Park, on the outskirts of DC, has the magnificent carousel
and its wonderful restored Wurlitzer 165 band organ.
