A comment of mine in yesterday's MMD posting needs correcting.
Wayne Stahnke's WEB files were said to be proprietary. Fortunately
for the music roll community as a whole, that turns out to be a false
assumption on my part. Although I've been using Wayne's reading
services to have Ampico rolls scanned into WEB file format for perfor-
ating, I had never discussed with Wayne the particulars of his policy
on distribution and use of the WEB file format as such.
When, at Robbie's suggestion, I contacted Wayne to clarify the status
of the WEB format, he explained that it had been developed with the
goal of having it become a universally accepted computer format for
music rolls. To back up this position, Wayne offers to make the
C-language source code available to all comers. Wayne Stahnke's
altruism in this matter should serve as inspiration for all of us.
From my own standpoint, the WEB format has shown itself to be very well
suited for work being done here at Precision Music Rolls. But it would
appear that the format's potential extends well beyond our particular
needs, allowing practically any kind of music roll format to be
accommodated.

Precision Music Rolls
[ The WEB file format supports 240 data channels plus two text streams
[ for lyrics, etc. It is especially designed to store the data which
[ controls a punching or perforating machine, to create music rolls or
[ book music. Programs such as Wind and WindPlay, by Richard Brandle,
[ convert the WEB data, in real time, into MIDI wireline signals for
[ the PowerRoll and other magnet valve devices. -- Robbie
