"The Pearls" Played by Jelly Roll Morton
By Julian Dyer
I had a look at Karl Ellison's list of rolls (announced in the 990505
MMD) and was intrigued to see that one of the rolls listed is Jelly
Roll Morton's 'The Pearls' on Vocalstyle 50488.
I've only ever seen this listed as one of the two 'lost' Morton rolls,
known only through a Vocalstyle advert from the 20s (the other is one
of the 'Spanish tinge' rolls -- Mamanita or Tia Juana, if I recall).
It certainly wasn't included in Rob DeLand's BluesTone issues of all
the know JRM rolls a few years back. I was intrigued to see that it
has surfaced.
When and where did it appear? Was it luck, or some persistent and
rigorous search?
Morton fans should all be leaping to their order forms right now!
I wonder how many other great rolls are waiting to be discovered?
