Ampico "Favourite Fifty" Rolls
By Alan Whytock
Checking through my collection of Ampico reproducing piano rolls
I noted that I had quite a few with the label heading (only on the
box) "The Favourite Fifty collection of Ampico recordings".
I do not recall any mention of these in Elaine Obenchain's catalogue,
or in any other publication. Likewise, some rolls are "Red label
Recordings." Were these for marketing or pricing purposes? Perhaps
someone can enlighten me. Does a list of the favourite fifty exist?
Here in the South of France I find there are very few player pianos or
other automatic musical instruments save for the Barbarie Organs which
are everywhere in the streets. Very different to my previous life in
the UK where I spent many hours (if not years) restoring player pianos
and organs. I now exist with my favourite 88-note pedal player and an
Ampico reproducing piano, along with some barrel pianos and a Wurlitzer
jukebox of 1941 vintage.
