Dan Caulfield wrote, "No one bid on this organ; there was a opening
reserve price of $14,000. It did not sell."
I took a look at this item while it was still in play. May I offer a
few observations? In my opinion, e-bay is not the proper market for an
item which has such a narrow market. One must consider how many fans
of mechanical music will want a barrel-operated band organ. Only those
who value history and authenticity above versatility. A museum, or
perhaps someone desiring to round out a large personal collection?
This instrument would be better appreciated/bid in a catalogued auction
with one of the large auction houses (Christie's, Sotheby's, etc.).
E-bay just isn't the right place. The problem isn't the band organ,
it's the auction. E-bay is too "common", in my opinion.
Gem Roller Organs are more suited to e-bay. (Which reaches the common
folk who call the rollers, "cobs". Don't know why these are not called
barrels, which they are.)
