Joyce Bright asked about 78 rpm turntables. Kurt Nauck, of Nauck's
vintage records, sells several varieties of 78 rpm turntables, the least
expensive of which is around $200.00, and has six (!) speeds.
I went another route, and wound up with a very satisfactory (for me)
four speed turntable/changer for about half the price. I went to a
local thrift store, and found a four-speed BSR turntable that had once
been a component in someone's stereo system. It had a tag that said
"works", and I paid $4.00 for it. When I got it home, it needed a new
needle, which Radio Shack had at @ 2 for $25.00 (too much), and the
changer didn't work just right.
Eventually, I took it to a local electronics store, and for $80.00,
they got everything working properly. It hooks into my stereo like any
other component, and I'm pleased as punch. There were several other
"component" turntables at the thrift store. They are usually easy to
identify; they almost always will have RCA plugs on the back, and no
built-in speakers. It is a good idea to never spend much at the thrift
store, even if it says "works", because it might not. Even if it works
partially, you can save good money by having it repaired, and you wind
up with a perfectly good turntable. I did!
One other thing: if a repair shop tells you it cant be fixed, because
"they don't make parts for these old things anymore", get on the phone
and do some calling. While they don't make new parts anymore, some
repair shops keep old turntables to scavenge from. It CAN be fixed!
