Turntable for 78 RPM Records
By Don Cox
Turntables with 78 rpm are readily available but expensive. (Of course
you would be able to sell the Technics.)
Look at http://www.audio.ndirect.co.uk/garrard/
Rumble and acoustic feedback are more of a problem with 78s so good
suspension is important. My 401 is mounted on a softly inflated inner
tube (a small size, to fit a "Mini") and gives excellent results on
78s with the special stylus in a Shure V15 cartridge.
It is easier to "listen through" the surface noise if you play in
stereo -- the noise is spread across the stereo stage and the music
is in the centre.
An interesting site with downloadable files of Edison disc recordings
is http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/edhtml/
This includes some pieces such as "Kitten on the Keys" which are also
known from rolls.
