The suggestion Jim Cook made of using a Hi-Fi (stereo) VCR was the most
logical suggestion for getting a good quality recording for the least
amount of money. I would go one step further and since you are going
to be using a mixer and there is left and right audio inputs on Hi-Fi
VCR's I would go all the way and do a stereo recording.
I have been doing a lot of research about microphone placement and
recording pianos in stereo, and there are some really good techniques
to be used. There are a number of sites on the net that deal with the
question on mic placement for recording a piano in stereo. I have
spent a number of hours researching the net for an upcoming recording
project I'm planning to be involved with. The best article, by far, I
have found is entitled: "The Great inSync Technical Tip Of The Day
Piano Miking Summit." Here is one small quote:
"...(what is) the best way to mike a grand piano (remember the big
heavy things with all the strings in them?)... it might be of interest
to others (and certainly to me) how to get the best sound out of such
an instrument, including just enough overtones to capture the inimit-
able sound of a real piano without getting lost in the host of tones
and reverberations which emanate from it."
Very interesting reading. The article deals only with grands but the
philosophies used and taught can be adapted for use with an upright.
