Manuscript Notation Software
By Johnny Lite

I just bought the Jelly Roll Morton transcriptions-from-piano-roll
by Artis Wodehouse and I was impressed with the level of detail and
accuracy of the music. The folio's intro mentions how commercially
available software was used to make these transcriptions, but doesn't
go into more detail.

I've wanted to transcribe some of my own MIDI piano solos into nota-
tion but have had strange results. Assuming it was the best program,
I downloaded a demo of Finale to try out. The MIDI-to-score trans-
cription rendered much of the bass in the treble clef -- it sort of
looks like "note pate'". I searched around at the Finale (Coda)
web site for info on this but found nothing. Any pointers available
from Robbie or anyone?

Thanks,

Johnny Lite

[ Finale produces beautiful manuscripts, and Artis used it to
[ create the Morton folio. But it took her a year to learn Finale!
[ I use a cheap program (Encore) and do all the editing I can on
[ the MIDI file beforehand, e.g., I place the right-hand notes in
[ track 1 and left hand in track 2. That helps Encore a lot.
[ I also extend the note durations to almost full value, so that
[ Encore doesn't insert lots of unsightly rests. -- Robbie
