Introduction & A. K. Brill
By Dan Caulfield

Hi, I'm Dan Caulfield, now living in Cleveland, Ohio, but I grew up
in Anchorage, Alaska, where I owned a small ten-ride amusement park
until it was destroyed by fire in 1968. But I'm still in the amusement
business.

Robbie asked me if I was any relation to MMDer Matthew Caulfield;
I'm sorry, I don't know, but it seems if you go back far enough, all
of the Caulfields are related, and if mechanical music interest runs in
the family, I would guess we are. We have never met.

I'm interested in mechanical music: I own a Celestina that I found
in Alaska many years ago. I also own a small cob roller organ and I've
just purchased plans for "John Smith's Busker Organ" and I plan to
build one. I've had good dealings with Chris Doe, who is John Smith's
web and Internet representative. Chris has gotten back to me every
time I've had a question. The plans are simple and I think I'll have
no trouble building the organ. You may contact Chris at:

I also have plans for two calliopes which includes the construction of
pipes for both the Tangley and National style instruments. Both plans
were published by A. K. Brill back in the 1970's. If anyone knows who
holds the title to the copyright, I would sure like to know who it is.

Aaron Brill died many years ago and I can't find any information
about his wife, Dorthey. They were from Peoria, Illinois. He made
and sold plans for all sorts of amusement devices, including rides,
sideshow attractions, carnival games, magic illusions and plans for
two calliopes. I have many of the plans but I'm always looking for
more. I would love to publish a book if I could find any of the Brill
family members to receive permission for use of the materials.

If anyone out there can offer suggestions or knows of the Brill family
please let me know. You may e-mail me at <Dan_Caulfield@msn.com>.

Thanks

Dan Caulfield

[ Welcome to MMD, "Cousin Dan". Those calliope plans would be fun
[ to have. I sure hope we can help track down the A. K. Brill family.
[ Keep us informed of your progress with the busker organ! :-)
