I am still reeling from the news of John Roache's passing; he was an
incredibly kind man and an outstanding musician. I have just spoken to
his wife, Judy, who tells me that if anyone wishes to remember John in
any way, she would be grateful for contributions made to the Old Town
Music Hall, 140 Richmond Street, El Segundo, CA 90245.
El Segundo is a tiny town just minutes away from the Los Angeles Air-
port (LAX) and in that town they have this theatre, Old Town Music Hall,
which features a "Mighty Wurlitzer" played weekly on Fridays and
Saturday nights and Saturday and Sunday matinees, along with their
feature films, which are almost always classic musicals of the '30s
or '40s. There's a sing-a-long as well, and it's a great time in the
Old Town (Music Hall) that night.
They also have a number of concerts a year, and John was a great fan
of the Music Hall, its wonderful Wurlitzer, the pianos they have there
(including an Ampico upright), and the concerts. In fact, he was
involved in the development of a ragtime and early jazz concert that
will take place the third weekend in June featuring our own (Yay!
Hurray!!) Robbie Rhodes, the magnificent novelty pianist Alex Hassan,
and another amazing pianist, Jim Turner.
I am presently working on a project with Alex Hassan, and John Roache
was involved with it. Although I had just met John within the past
year, I found him to be an exceptional friend and a great musician.
He produced several of his own CDs, and they are definitely worth
owning. More on that later, but for now, I wanted to share with you
they information about his wife's wishes.
Regards,
Tom Steuer
