Removing Old Mending Tape From Music Rolls
By Spencer Chase
I remember reading that Coleman fuel has additives that might leave
a residue. They are added to protect the appliances and are not
volatile. It might be better to use pure naphthalene to remove
adhesives. This is the base for the Coleman fuel and can be gotten
as a purer product.
I have had good but slow success using just gentle heat to remove old
dried tapes. You want to get them just warm enough to soften the
adhesive but not hot enough to melt it into the paper. Any minor
reside can then be removed with a solvent and there is less chance of
damaging the paper. I use a tiny heat gun that was made for shrinking
heat-shrink insulation tubing.
