Removing Old Mending Tape From Music Rolls
By Bruce Clark

To remove tape from fragile music rolls is quite a task, especially
if the roll is very old and the paper is beginning to deteriorate.

I have had success using kerosene. Brush it on with a small brush,
and let it soak in for about 15 minutes. Usually this will soften
the adhesive. Slowly peel back the tape. If there is any resistance,
apply more kerosene and give it more time.. Try again.

Clean up the residue using more kerosene. Let it dry and the kerosene
will evaporate.

Should the adhesive persist, one might try lighter fluid, acetone, or
Coleman stove and lamp fuel. Use extreme caution because of flammable
and toxic fumes. None of these are guaranteed to work, but it is worth
a try.
