It's a small world (though I wouldn't want to paint it). I also enjoyed
immensely the Australia Fair and the Verbeeck organ at the Salamanca
Market in Hobart. Believe it or not, I was in Hobart for a scientific
meeting (another hat) and on Saturday morning Feb. 6 I wandered into
the market, to be drawn immediately to its delightful racket. The music
selection and arrangements were all absolutely topnotch.
It is a very handsome installation on a trailer, and there were two
very nicely made book cabinets with it holding what appeared to be about
100 books. I spoke with the owner at some length (though I didn't get
his name) and bought three of his five CDs. I haven't had a chance to
listen to them critically, but if they are close to the live performance
they will be very worthwhile. He does have a web site and an e-mail
address (which I don't have at the moment -- I am still un-lagging
from the trip), and I invited him to join in the MMD proceedings.
He said that he has dragged the organ over 200,000 kilometers since
its purchase in the early 90's, and was collecting donations for some
refit work. While it certainly looked and sounded very swell, he said
that there was some wear on moving parts that was slowing it down a bit.
More details as they rise to the top in my unpacking.
