In reply to Dick Merchant's question in 990206 MMDigest about the
Seeburg in home use format, I offer the following.
I graduated from college in 1962. While there, my fraternity had such
a device which played 45-rpm discs. When the double door wood cabinet
was opened, the interior was obviously the same mechanism as in
commercial juke boxes except that it was installed backwards, with the
moving head towards the rear.
Below each record was a tiny selector lever that moved vertically in
four positions. I may have the order wrong, but the positions were
full down -- the record would not play,
up one notch -- record would play left side,
up two notches -- record would play both sides,
up three notches -- record would play right side.
The mechanism would move from right to left playing all records set to
play right side or both. When the mechanism reached the far left, it
would reverse direction and play all records set to play left side or
both. The pattern of play would repeat endlessly until the machine was
turned off or until someone changed the lever positions.
It was great for dancing!!
