It's funny that now I'm rebuilding an old Monarch, and everywhere
I find efforts to cut costs and corners in the building of this piano.
How sad it is to know that it's still better than most uprights built
today.
My house was built in 1950, and was a hurry-up job where they cut every
corner they could think of to get it up fast. I had a contractor check
the roof framing to see if I could hang kitchen cabinets from the
ceiling.
He took one, quick look and laughed, "You may think this house is
cheap, and it was when they built it. But, I'll tell you this: it's
built like a brick ***t house. You would pay a fortune to have a house
built of the same materials and the same quality today."
