Red Welte Vorsetzer in Steinway Grand
By Mark Reinhart

I consider the conversion of Welte Vorsetzer parts to be fitted to a
gutted Steinway grand to be ill-advised. The stack used on Steinway
grands is different dimensionally than that found on the Vorsetzer.
Further, the expression units will also be problematic in mounting to
the underside of the grand. The amount of time and labor would be
extraordinary to properly convert the Welte Vorsetzer components to be
usable on the grand.

Here in the USA there are at least four times as many Welte Vorsetzers
as there are Steinway-Welte grands. I can understand the temptation
but think the conversion will not be the success as planned.

An interceding posting suggested that another player format be considered.
I agree. I must also add that a gutted Steinway Duo-Art would be much
easier to retrofit than a gutted Steinway-Welte. The difficult aspect
to the Steinway-Welte is that the stack is fitted above the keyboard
and must act directly on the piano action. Fitting a Welte Licensee
stack to a gutted Duo-Art would be much easier.

Just a few thoughts on the subject.
