The Texas Theater in San Antonio had a Weber Duo-Art located on its
"promenade" which was sponsored by the Aeolian dealer of the day, San
Antonio Music Company. I have a few announcements and even a program
that was printed and issued by the theater. The Texas is long gone and
the Duo-Art is also.
I am taking the next two months off to finish a book I started in 1974
on the history of the motion picture theaters in San Antonio. Some
writing still has to be done but the editing is the part that I dread.
I am asking members of the MMD to help if they can.
I have some photos, a lot of newspaper ads and a large collection of
original theater tickets from those days. I need more photographs,
post cards or whatever showing outside or inside views of San Antonio
theaters. If anyone has such items I am prepared to buy them or pay
for their use in a publication.
In the heyday of the motion picture San Antonio had four Robert Morton
pipe organs, two Hope-Jones Unit Orchestras, a Mighty Wurlitzer, three
Reuter theater organs, a Moller theater organ, three Hillgreen-Lane
organs, a Seeburg-Smith Unit Orchestra (which does not appear in Jun-
chen's book), two Wurlitzer PianOrchestras with German roll changers,
an American Photoplayer, a Wurlitzer style U photoplayer, and assorted
coin pianos used in early "storefront" theaters.
Quite a lineup. I have the specs for all the pipe organs courtesy of
the man who serviced them all.
Any help would be most appreciated.
