Mike Kitner has a fun idea, many of us have discovered strange and
sometimes wonderful things inside instruments. For instance, the
neatest thing we ever found was in a very large Mermod Freres
interchangeable cylinder music box.
When we were carrying it into the house we heard a rolling sound. We
had to fish around a lot but we found a Tiffany (actually, marked)
mechanical pencil in the shape of the Metropolitan Insurance Building
in New York City!
This is sterling silver and extremely detailed, down to the clocks at
the top of the building and the windows, etc. You pull on the bottom
and the pencil extends for use.
With some research we found that these were given out at a reception
for the opening of the building in the early 1900's. It remains quite
a treasured piece in our collection.
