You wrote in MMDigest 981129: "We have a pump organ of Mason & Hamlin,
Boston, USA, style 110, No. 215532. On the left side there are two
seals that interlock. Looks like it says: UELIQUE* (and a face with
a side view)."
The interlocking seals are reproductions of honors bestowed onto Mason
& Hamlin at the last and greatest of the World's Exhibitions held in
Paris in 1878 where the company was awarded the Grand Gold Medal, which
was supposedly the highest distinction for reed organs conferred by the
jury, and the only Gold Medal awarded to any American musical instru-
ments. The obverse side says "Repubique Francaise"; the reverse side
says "Exposition Universelle Internationale de 1878".
Triva: the following were members of that jury:
*Dr. Franz Liszt of Austria-Hungary
*Gevaert, Director of the Brussels Conservatory in Belgium
*Dr. Edward Hanslick of Austia-Hungary
*Dr. John Stainer, Organist of St. Paul's Cathedral in London
*Dr. Carlos Sedano of Spain
O. Hegar of Switzerland
Thibouville-Lamy of France
Gustav. Chouquet, Director of the Paris Conservatory of Music
J. Armingaud of France
Reber, Professor at the Paris Conservatory, Member of the
Academie (France)
Vervoitte of France
Bord of France
