Ken Northfield asked about his family music box in yesterday's MMD.
Baker Troll made many fine boxes in the late 1800's. I'm sure that
Bill Wineburg will see this and send some accurate dates and
information.
In addition, I can suggest that Ken contact Dave Young and ask for a
copy of his book, "How Old Is My Music Box", which seems to address his
question rather specifically. It also has a list of patent dates and
corresponding numbers which is often a great help generally. Dave's
number is 716-473-4866. The book costs about $5.
As far as taking care of your music box, that takes a little
discussion.
The most important thing I can tell you is don't let anyone mess with
it unless they have experience restoring music boxes. Do not take it
to the local jewelry store or antique dealer. If you send an e-mail
with a phone number and location (general) I can give you some help in
that area and direct you to someone nearby who can fill in whatever
additional help you need.
There are several excellent sources who post to MMD and you can find
them in the MMD Archives. If you join MBSI, there are numerous sources
listed in the back on the directory and many who advertise in each
Bulletin.
Insurance is a simple matter if you have a home owner's policy. Call
up the insurance company and ask for a 'fine arts' rider. You will
need an appraisal in writing. The cost will probably be less than $15
per year.
